Legend, Teacher, Mentor

Herman Leonard passed this weekend. Do yourself a favor and visit his images.

I had the privilege to work with Herman as his assistant on many different shoots. The years i was assisting him i was soaking in everything i could. He was a master photographer, and printer. Above all he loved what he did. He loved the people he photographed, and his images show that. He taught me to slow down, and engage the present, and engage the art.

You will be missed Herman, thanks for leaving us so many wonderful moments.

  1. Being absent from NOLA at the moment, I heard about Herman's passing on the ABC Nightly News of all places. It was certainly powerfully emotional to hear of the passing of such an influential and important artist. Whereas his name may not (but should) be household, his iconic images are forever associated with the history of american jazz and a particular moment in time. We will all miss Herman, and his art will certainly continue to awe and inspire for generations to come.
